Tasha sat next to me at my AA meeting. She wore dark sunglasses and hadn’t looked at the front of the church since we got there. My sponsor, Nick, was on the stage, sharing his latest struggles with trying to keep away from alcohol. It was understandable. Alcohol was the hardest shit to stay away from because it was everywhere.

I took a deep breath and glanced at Tasha again. I nudged her. “You aight?” I whispered.

“Yeah,” she said, finally looking at me. She rubbed her eye under her glasses and then glanced away from me.

“Tash.” I lifted her glasses and saw that she wasn’t fine. Her eyes were red-rimmed. She batted my hand away and looked to the front of the room again. “Wassup?” I asked her.

“Nothin’,” she said. Her tone didn’t invite further discussion. Anyway, I was at a loss. Tasha never cried.

“Tash.”

“Listen to Nick, he sharin’ his truth and it’s...” She nodded and swallowed but didn’t say anything else. I took a deep breath and had half a mind to leave and see what was up with Tasha.

“Do you want to leave?” I whispered.

“No, we stayin’ until the end, and I’m sure Nick gon’ want to talk to you. I’m fine.” I let it drop and we stayed until the end. I spoke to Nick for a few seconds and then pulled Tasha towards Adrien’s truck.

“You cryin’?”

“No, I was moved by Nick’s testimony,” she said.

“Bitch, nothin’ move you. What’s the matter? You worried?”

“I’m not worried. I’m frustrated, and I think I...I have feelings for Adrien,” she mumbled.

“Feelings? Like, for real?” We stood in front of the trunk and she pinched the bridge of her nose and nodded.

“I don’t know how, he just...he got under my skin. I care about him, but he’s such a fuckin’ idiot. He gon’ get himself killed, his boys killed, and who knows what else,” she admitted. My heart dropped.

“I thought you said you had him handled?”

“Yeah, well, he ain’t listenin’ to me.” We leaned against the trunk and just watched the church empty out. I didn’t know what to think. I felt oddly calm.

“So, flat out, he just told you that he wasn’t gon’ stop?”

“He told me to trust him, and I want to, but he ain’t taking me seriously.”

“He told you to trust him? But he don’t know Apollo,” I said.

“He said he and Renzo gon’ make sure nothin’ happen. He want me to depend on him like I do Ferg. But he don’t know that Ferg the one takin’ care of Aunt Nay until this either pop off or blow over.”

“What can we do then? If your feelings wrapped up in him then...” I shrugged. “We have to trust that he can handle whatever might happen. I hope nothin’ do.” I took a deep breath and glanced at the sky. The sun was finally coming out, it was less humid.

“I feel stupid though. I just...it’s not fair. I don’t know how to make him understand how serious this is.
